Chains We Like: Jollibee

Don't you hate going to the mall and then getting stuck eating mall food, just because your child suddenly declares his or her hunger and there's no time to find a decent place (except for the perennial favorite, Hot Dog on a Stick—not really a meal, unless you're visiting the L.A. County Fair)? So we were very eager to check out the new Jollibee at the Eagle Rock Plaza which, thankfully, has been sold by Westfield Shopping Centers to a company called Centro Watt Properties. Centro Watt seems content to let the first mall in the Northeast area retain it's small-town identity--which is going Filipino, in case you hadn't figured it out. Tucked away in the old Bob's Big Boy Jr. spot, there's an homage to the old fiberglass Big Boy—a giant fiber Jollibee—right at the entrance that Bob used to grace.

Back to Jollibee. The folks at Chowhound had been raving about their ChickenJoy fried chicken, so we thought we'd have a bite. Thanks Chowhouders. Jollibee's kids' menu features the signature chicken, by itself or with the sweet, Hawaiian-style spaghetti, and a drink for about 6 bucks. My daughter was delighted. We got it to-go and the aroma filled up the station wagon, making us wish we'd bought some more Joy in a bucket for lunch the next day. Oh, and they make a wicked taro boba shake.

There's also a Jollibee drive-through on Beverly Blvd., just west of Vermont. For other LA locations, click here.
